Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children

Child sexual abuse is a community problem. To be intentional about protecting children, adults need to come together and boldly confront the issue. The Children’s Advocacy Center/Hope House has become the lead organization for prevention efforts in St. Tammany and Washington Parishes and is pleased to offer Prevent Now and Stewards of Children to community members interested in protecting our most valuable and vulnerable citizens – our children. Both programs drive home the point that abuse can be stopped in real-time!

Why do we need these programs?

  • 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys is sexually abused before age 18.
  • 90% of our victims are abused by someone they know.
  • 247 children were interviewed for allegations of abuse at Hope House in 2011.
  • Child abuse costs our community 2 million dollars annually.

Prevent Now
Prevent Now is a Community Awareness Meeting designed to bring members of the community together to hear about the problem of child sexual abuse. It is built on a collection of best practices that create and sustain grassroots efforts aimed at changing current practices. Prevent Now makes prevention a priority in the community and fosters a safer environment for children. The program includes:

  • The human and economic impact of child abuse and what the community is (or is not) doing to prevent it.
  • The high costs associated with the aftermath of abuse.
  • The inexpensive solutions to prevent abuse from even occurring.
  • A 25-minute survivor documentary and facilitated discussion about making prevention a priority and fostering a safer environment for children.

Stewards of Children
Stewards of Children is a 2.5 hour training program led by an Authorized Facilitator that teaches adults how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The program is designed for organizations that serve youth and for individuals concerned about the safety of children.  It is the only nationally distributed, evidence-based program proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes, and change child protective behaviors.  Research findings from independent evaluators are available on www.D2L.org.
The program includes:

  • A three-part DVD presentation integrating commentary from sexual abuse survivors, experts in the field and other concerned adults all providing practical guidance for preventing and responding to sexual abuse.
  • An interactive workbook designed to facilitate discussion, reinforce key concepts, and serve as a resource guide and personal action plan for resolving child sexual abuse.
  • A Facilitator-led discussion about important issues in sexual abuse prevention and the relevance of these issues within the community and organizations that serve children.
  • Darkness to Light's® 7 Steps to Protecting Our Children: A guide for adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse.

The outcomes of the program:

  • Increased awareness of the prevalence, consequences, and circumstances of child sexual abuse.
  • New skills for adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse.
  • Positive change to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Individual commitment to action through a personal prevention plan.

Who uses the program?

  • Organizations and businesses seeking to train staff and volunteers in the prevention of child sexual abuse.
  • Organizations and businesses looking to enhance their child protection policies and procedures or respond to insurance requirements.
  • Individuals desiring to learn more about how they can protect children and make a difference in their community.
